Christians does not practice lent because it is not doctrine of Christ. Lent is a doctrine of Anti-Christ. Do not believe any teaching- doctrines which is not came from the bible. They are pretending that they love Christ to make you believe that they areChristian. Read the following verses:
Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2Ti 3:6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
2Ti 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
2Ti 3:9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
2Ti 3:10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
2Ti 3:11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
2Ti 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
2Ti 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
Tit 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Lent begins 40 days before Easter because 40 is a number that is associated with suffering or sacrifice, since Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, and Noah's Ark endured 40 days of rain.
The date for Easter is determined by the phase of the moon, since it is associated with the Celtic pagan holiday of Eoster, which was a spring festival. The church placed a lot of holidays to sort of cancel out or go along with traditional European festivals. Christmas goes with the holiday called Yule.
Make sense? Modern Christianity is blend of ancient European traditions and the Gospels, etc. Most religions do this in some way.

It's not arbitrary, it has to do with the cycles of the moon. The equinox. Seasons and things in nature.
In simple (?) terms Easter occurs on the first Sunday following the first full moon that occurs on or after the day of the vernal equinox. In 2006 the vernal equinox was on March 20. The first full moon after that was Thursday, April 13 at 12:40 p.m. EDT. Thus, Easter last year was Sunday, April 16. This year: vernal equinox on March 21st, next full moon April 2nd, Easter = April 8th.
The vernal equinox is also known as the first day of spring, which is the date (near March 21 in the northern hemisphere) when night and day are nearly the same length and Sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward.

The date follows the lunar calendar. This website is pretty overwhelming, but it answers your question exactly.

Some really complicated astronomy and math are involved.
Here is a website that explains it: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/easter.html
