Are loop shots better than straight direct shots in basketball?

I am not sure what a loop shot is but i think you mean a shot with more arch.

The answer is actually simple physics. An object (the ball), traveling towards a vertical cylinder with more arch (the hoop) has a better chance of going in because it is descending for longer and therein has better chance and more ways of going in...

However, its all about technique. There are some ugly shots that work (Shawn Marion, L. Barbosa J. Childress etc)

But if you look at good shooters (Dirk, Ray Allen) they all shoot with higher arching shots.

If by chance you mean putting an ARC on the ball,... then YES it IS better to put an arc on the ball than a line drive shot.
