Mexico is closest to home and easy to relate with the culture. A 1,000 will get you by in one of the beach communities which are popular with Americans and Canadians. For $500 you can rent a decent clean furnished 1 bedroom with once a week maid service and $100 a week can provide good eats and plenty of Corona if you do most of your own cooking. The other $25 will provide an occasional movie, renting some DVDs and a meal at a good restaurant. Adventurous Americans and Canadians living abroad have a very tight knit community that provides plenty of community support and are great at social activities which will keep you busy and entertained. Actually 2 people can do fine with this budget.

The answer is nowhere. If currencies trade in the open market, they adjust based on exchange rate. When the dollar is "strong", a time reference should always be given. Economic news does not give a reference every time, but a day is implied. "the USD is strong against the Yen" means that today the USD buys more Yen. But in the present moment, there is market equilibrium- the USD may buy 100 yen- that is the rate, not strong or weak. For e.g. many people would say that the British Pound is strong against the because 1 pound may buy 2 USD, but in England, a commodity such as a Kilo of salt may cost 1 Pound, but it will cost 2 USD- which is the same....

I'm assume that you're affluent and have some money lying around? anyhow, I would say that you could live in most third world countries just fine on $1000 a month.

By the way, I disagree with Mystie, there is no way anyone could live on $100 a month in mexico unless you plan on living in a slum with no running water or electricity, and I assume that you would expect to have these commodoties no matter where you live.

How long do you want to live on $1,000. I would say Mexico. You can easily live for about $100 a month and you don't have to pay for a plane ticket. In Tanzania Africa you can live in Dar Salaam for $100 a month. India it is cheap also. For $3 a week you can rent a room in a hostel in Chenai and eat for .25 cents a meal.

in any third world country, $1000/month will be more than enough for one person.
$1000 a year might be possible in the poorer ones.
