What are some reasons why Tom Robinson is considered a mocking bird in the novel "To Kill a Mocking Bird"?

If memory serves: I think he was considered the mocking bird because he was "special" in this case both mentally and physically handicapped. In the book they mention (again if memory serves) that it's bad luck to kill a mockingbird because even though they are not the most beautiful of creatures they are still special (or something close to that). I think what they were saying is that everyone serves a purpose in this world, and no one is better than anyone else. Which includes intelligence, race, creed, etc.

It is a sin to kill someone that does nothing in society but its a even bigger sin to kill them if they contribute to society like tom robinson and like the mocking bird produces music he contributes to his community
