I have looked at different models from the Eclipse to the Diamante, to the Montero Sport. All lose their value quickly. Is this because of unreliability or what?

Mitsubishi is as reliable as any other asian car make. However the value drops down considerably because they are not as popular as other brands, the demand is low.

Because of inferior quality, build, reliability, and the company itself may not be around for long. I had a 2006 Eclipse GT and and traded for a 2007 Scion Tc. The Eclipse was over 31,000 dollars and I received 10 grand less in the trade about six months later. Mitsubishi vehicles do not hold value like other Japanese cars such as Toyota and Honda due to consumer studies by JD Powers and the vehicle's unreliability. I used to be an avid Mitsubishi owner ( 3 Eclipses in 10 years) but after the last one, which was supposed to be best, never again. It was a gas guzzler and noisy. My Scion is a much better ride and more bang for the buck as well.

Mitsubishi has had it's troubles with recalls and such, they have had to fight the low resale value for a long time...
But then look at Jaguars. they fall into that same boat.

It's probably because of reliability. Check Consumer Reports and they will give you reliability ratings. Honda and Toyota rate very high.
