When I make a family, I only get 20,000 simoleons. I can't really buy a decent house. Whats the point of the more expensive ones, if you can't buy them, then? Help please!!

I create my own house first off, it only has four rooms and I have four sims. (and 20,000 simoleons). Once they have established jobs and get promotions and things I expand the house.
Only once have I got two sims in the one house to the absolute maximum job potential, and I bought a very expensive house =)

You need to get your family good jobs, then when they have enough money you sell your old house and buy a better one (or build your own)

You can get the a job, and then move them out later. Or you can just move them into a cheap house, type in the cheat for money, and then move them out.
