I can't do the same things with the pick. I like to play two, sometimes three fingers with my thumb (strumming hand) planted on the pickup.

Well, as an old guitar player I can tell you that eventually you will grow callouses and your fingers won't hurt anymore. It takes a while, though, so just persevere.

When you starting to play the bass, the fingers are soft... because you playing a lot then the strings get your fingers to be sore. The only thing that will help you is time... Your fingers will get stiffer and then you will have no problem

i am thirty years old and have been playing guitar since i was 7 and bass since i was ten. the only way to keep your fingers from getting sore is to keep playing as long as you can take it each day. even if your fingers feel like there is no way you can touch the strings that day, at least pick it up and play as long as you can. before you know it, probably within a few weeks or so you will notice you can play longer and longer each time. my fingers still hurt when i play longer, or harder than i normally do. stick with it.
