Large govt was never a traditional conservative ideal. But it is something that the wire-tapping and Patriot Act and huge tax cuts for the rich businessmen creates.

Wire tapping, the Patriot Act and tax cuts do not increase the size of government.

However, "no child left behind", the new prescription drug entitlement, funding AIDs research, funding alternative fuels research etc. do.

This is why true conservatives are not happy with Republicans. Republicans do a decent job on the war on terror, but are horrible with domestic policy. We truly have no voice in government anymore. Our only choices are full socialism (democrat) or socialism light (republican), neither are good options.

I think that there are very few people that could (in all good conscience) call themselves Republicans and conservatives. President Bush is now bending over backwards with the democrats just to "get along". This was never a principle of conservatism. Many top Republicans agree with Bush or (worse yet) have defected over to the democrats.

I think that the Republican party is now an embarrassment to conservative voters.

Wow, you totally misunderstand government if you think tax cuts support a big government.

You would have done better to say the Medicare Prescription Plan D, the Department of Homeland Security, and things that CREATE government bureaucracy, not cut them.

But Bush has never been a conservative.

The current crop of GOP congresscritters are so far from what got them the majority in 1994, it's hard to describe how much they've upset me.

When DeLay said there was nothing left to trim off that pork-bloated bill, that did it for me. Who the hell were these guys, and what did they do with the party I voted for in 1994?

And I strongly concur with all the above responses from conservatives.

I'm a Republican, a conservative, and I have embraced Bush as president.

I think you're confused on what big government is.

Big government is a pejorative term used mostly by political conservatives or advocates of laissez-faire(The doctrine or system of government non-interference in the economy except as necessary to maintain economic freedom. Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher were great believers in laissez-faire economics.) to describe the central government of their country. The term is mainly used to evoke criticism of a government which is believed to be excessively large and costly, with too many programs that interfere on too many areas of public life.

It's liberals who what the government involved in every little thing. Liberals are constantly whining and making 'the government' make decisions on things they have no business concerning themselves with.

Such as gay marriage. You see, there was no law against it, the government had no opinion, really, until gay rights activists and liberals in general demanded that it be made legal. Now, that forces states and individuals and political candidates to have an opinion.

I believe that I stated here on answers no long ago, that the next think we'd hear is 'why can't I marry my brother or sister?' Well how many watched the special on abc last night?

When we force our government to make a moral decision for us, or beg for more entitilement programs, instead of using common sense and just 'leaving things alone', we make the governement bigger.

Many. But the reasons are not what you listed. His spending will never sit well with Conservative Republicans, and a Congress that went along with him.

Not a fan of representative government, creations like Homeland sham,TSA & nobid subcontractors getting mega seed money! Bush has more people on the public dole than any president in history, the worst of it is none of them produce or serve the public effectively, its like their a who's who social club show up to act like your working for welfare pay routine!
