shave downwards to get all of the long hair off. and then CAREFULLY shave upwards to get the rest off.. just be warned that when it starts growing back in it's going to itch like crazy.. my advice is (and i know this sounds crazy) IF you use diaper cream after you shave, you wont get razor burn as bad...keep up with it and it wont itch when growing in

Shaving the bikini area should always be done following the direction of the hair. To minimize the risk of ingrown hairs, it is a good idea to exfoliate the area regularly (remove dead skin cells). If you use an electric razor you are less likely to get ingrown hairs than if you use a regular bladed razor, and if you use a hair removal cream, it minimizes that chance even more. The bikini area can be very sensitive, so using hair removal creams might be very painful. Waxing the bikini area is also very painful, along with the fact that it too can add to the likelihood of ingrown hairs.

Well you shave the direction the hair is growing. If its kinda long you need to trim it first then shave but if you get razor burn easily make sure the hair is soft before you shave.

I agree with the last statement. I used to get bad irritation with a razor. I use a shaver. Theres a good tutorial that makes it painless to get a smooth shave with no ingrown hairs.

this is just a suggestion, but i would try just trimming it really short instead. shaving can cause ingrown hairs (which can look like pimples or sores) and rashes/irratation, which is really unattractive and uncomfortable. just thought i would give a a heads up.
