My IPOD isnt letting me sync my songs with ITUNES?

I had an IPOD but it broke on me so I got a new one. I went to sync all of my songs I had saved in ITUNES and it doesnt even allow me the option to do this. Does anybody have any advice or support on how I can make this work to download all of my songs on the new IPOD? Any help would be so much appreciated. Download the ipod updater from apple.com. The software on the ipod may need to be updated before you can sync it with itunes.
