"who was the best MLB SS last year"

I take it you mean all around?

Derek Jeter was the worst full time defensive shortstop in the AL, and he was actually better last year than usual. Jose Reyes could have saved Jeter from being the worst if he had been in the AL..

Derek Jeter - RF 4.14
Jose Reyes - RF 3.86

They have to at least show up on defense if you're going to consider them the best all around SS in MLB!!

Right now I would take M Young, he can hit and he has improved defensively each year, up to the point he was #2 last year in the AL..

I'd say Reyes with Hanley Ramirez a very close second, then Jeter. I had Ramirez last year on the fantasy team until I used him in a trade for Sir Albert so I saw many of his games. He's a great SS and It'll be interesting to see if he can repeat last year's performance. I'm hoping to get him again in this year's draft.

If you mean by defensively I go with Adam Everett.

Sure he sucks at batting but hes the best defensive SS right now,

Derek Jeter is the best offensive SS and yeah he makes alot of great defensive plays but overall he doesn't do well.

"Jeter's defense has been criticized throughout his career. For years statistical analysts have pointed out that he makes fewer plays than most shortstops. At this point, according to most defense metrics, it's virtually indisputable that on a day-to-day basis, he's a below-average defender, despite the fact that he has won 3 Gold Glove awards, in addition to leading the American League in Zone Rating for the 2006 season. The book The Fielding Bible by John Dewan contains an essay by Bill James that explains why Astros shortstop Adam Everett is far superior to Jeter defensively. James writes that, in the past three years (2003-2005), Jeter was "probably the least effective defensive player in the major leagues, at any position."

He has also been often cited as the most overrated player in Major League Baseball, by critics and by other players, while he was voted the league's best shortstop by fellow players just one year earlier." from wikipedia.org

Adam Everett has the best fielding pct since 2004.

Im a fan of Derek Jeter but SS means defensive to me.

If you're talking strictly definsively it has to be Omar Vizquel. He led all MLB shortstops in fielding percentage and won the gold glove for the 11th time. He is seriously the smoothest player I've seen, he makes some amazing heads up plays and there's no question he's one of the best shortstops ever. Not to mention the fact that he's 40 and still plays like he's 20.

Jeter - second in batting and should've won MVP
He was already one of the top five SS's of all time and last year was his career best. Some may say Reyes but that is only because he had more fantasy value and the question was the best SS not the best fantasy scoring SS.

The best shortstop is clearly Derek Jeter because he can produce on the field (he should have won the MVP last year) and he is a leader off the field. The next best shortstop is Jose Reyes, and dont forget about Miguel Tejada.

i know alot of people are going with jeter but am going with jose reyes.not only does he know how to play the position defensively but, he can also play offensively. he had such a great season this past year even if he wasnt a considered a serious candidate for MVP.and this is becuz theres alot of great players on the mets who had a good season too.he stole more than 50 bases, had more than 15 triples and his speed amazingly helped the mets win alot of games.yea he still havent won any championiships but,hes still a young player and will have alot of apportunities to win a championiship on that great mets team.and as he davelops hes defense will get even better and hes offensive numbers will be better than jeters.yea about 3 years ago jeter was the best but right now its gotta be reyes.
