Butterflys lay eggs that become caterpillars that spin cocoons. Butterflys emerge full grown from the cocoons. When my son was little, we went to a Nature Store and bought a kit that included caterpillars in a special environment that you could watch spin their cocoons. You then attached the cocoons to another environment they sent you and you watched them emerge as Painted Lady butterflys. You then let them out. Fascinating.

No they do not exist. From the egg, a larva, then a pupa and finally an adult butterfly. All butterflies are mature insects.

only insects with hemimetabolism or incomplete metamorphosis have a stage that looks like the adult but is actually the immature form of the insect. They're called nymphs and they molt until they're the size of adults (and well.. they're adults)

butterflies have holometabolism, or complete metamorphosis, which means embryo -> larva -> pupa -> imago or adult
