Where does the term "you can't win for losing" come from and what does it mean? If you lose, you lose, right?

It means that you are such a loser that in a losing competition you would lose....I have no idea where it comes from

"you cant win, for losing" mean that losing gets you nothing, you wont win any prize for losing.

it means that you put forth your best effort in what seems to be a winning situation,but unfore seen factors undermind your efforts
