He's not typical.
He constantly states comparisons of his friends' behavior's and his own.
He doesn't engage in sex with girls or force himself on them as his roommate does.
He doesn't take relationships for granted as his friends do.
He can't behave in an acceptable manner socially. He constantly makes odd comments that his peers do not even bother to understand, writing off his comments and queries with the statement,"Not another Caulfield question..."
He can't take advantage of a situation nor stick up for himself when he knows he is wronged (the attack on him by the pimp of a hooker he picks up and does not sleep with.)
He doesn't even get enough sleep which is the reason for his collapse at the end...along with a fever, suggesting that he is also ignorant of the needs of his body. This is also supported with his own statement that he doesn't eat enough for a boy his height and age.
Finally, he is either chronically depressed (clinically) or manic-depressive: evidenced in his ingestion of alcohol and his constant mood swings as well as his indecisiveness over important subjects.
Holden Caulfield is not typical. Not for his time. Not for ours. And any quote from the young man's perspective in the novel would be enough to support this argument.
You'll do fine in exposition for any class. But I wish you would read this book. Find time for it in the future. It can change your own perspective.

here is a site with lots of quotes from the book:

and here is part of holden's definition on gradesaver.com:

Although he displays a number of typical teenage characteristics, his adolescent foibles take a turn for the more disturbing throughout the novel, as he reveals himself to be self-destructive and dangerously cynical.

...i read the book last year and i enjoyed it, so maybe you should read it just for fun. hope that helped.
