Trojan gave you a very good answer.
Just one other point. If you are a woman,ALWAYS take a man with you.Doesn't matter who it is or if he even knows anything about cars.A few years back I was looking at a car and got a price, which I thought was very high.I went back a few days later with a male friend and got a much different price.Guess they figured they could scam a woman, but not a man.
Good luck.

The most dependable cars (little breakdowns) and pass the safety tests are Toyota and Honda.
Cash will always give you the best price (talk to your bank first to see how much you qualify for) . Before you shop do some searching online, know what your looking for and what your willing to pay for it, (never be afraid to walk away). Never let on that you need a loan until you are satisfied with the price (if anything go home and think about for a day or two, let them sweat).
Avoid trading in a vehicle, sell it privately to get the value it's truly worth. If you have a trade in, settle on a price and then throw it in (make sure you know the black book value for it).
All dealers are the same but it's usually the salesman that can make or break the deal. Find someone who you can deal with and seems eager to please you and provide you with a great deal (or come close). Always make sure the car has been inspected by their establishment and take it to another mechanic if in doubt. Good luck car hunting (God I hate it).

Check out Toyota and Honda. Both are running promotions at this time. I just bought a Toyotal Corolla for my wife and got it for $50 above cost. Do not lease. Too expensive and they have too many games to play with to get a higher profit for themselves. If you have a good credit rating you may be able to get a very sharp interest rate. Press the dealer for the best rate he can get.
If you can, get the loan on your own, because you should be able to save money. The dealer always gets a percentage of the loan rate when you sign with his bank. Good luck.

After checking out the ratings on the net I bought a Toyota Rav 4 and love it! My problem was not taking a man with me and I got --well I didn't get the best deal. So always take a man with you, they won't let you get bullied.

try Toyota Corolla or Camry(best customer satisfaction rating re overall reliability, least amount of problems), or a Honda Civic or Accord.

***Regardless of which car you choose, spend a few bucks and buy a "CarFax" report ($40?) which gives you complete history of vehicle (just need car's V.I.N.) to protect you from buying a "lemon", or a car that's been rebuilt after being previously "written off" from an accident.

Go to a TOYOTA dealer and buy your car. You can't go wrong with a TOYOTA.
