ICK. Yes, I cringe when I hear the "boys" and "girls" thing. I think they wanted to say "girls" and were stuck with "boys" as its complement.
I hate the word gals, too, but for some strange reason, I sort of like using "guys" and "ladies" together.
But the safest and most obvious choice is "young men" and "young women".

It bothers me a little. However, I think Fox producers probably stress boys and girls since a lot of the viewers of the show are probably boys and girls. It keeps the younger viewers better connected to the show.

Don't be so sencitive.
Who cares if you use boys and girls or guys and gals.
The american english is not set up to use "younger versions" as an insult defacto. You have to make a point of using it as such before it becomes an insult.
Unlike in other languages

Compared to the judges they are boys and girls. I would be happy to be called a girl and not an old lady.

Is that really a problem so bad that its persistently bothering you?Why dont we call them dogs and cats,or gorillas and chimps. If you didnt notice, the ratings are still superior to other shows so i dont think it bothers many people to the bone so no matter what they call them, the show is a monster hit.

It doesn't bother me at all. Guys/boys/mean/males or girls/gals/wpmen/females....... they are all just diffrent ways of referring to both sexes. I dont care either way.
