In the UK, in enclosed public spaces from 1st July this year. I'm a smoker but can't say I'm radically against this.... it can't be nice for all those non-smokers (now the vast majority I reckon). But then again its just another case of the government telling us what we can do, how, why and when .....
Hope they put heaters outside for us smokers ;-)

No, not in the streets. Although some businesses have set limits on how close you can be to the entrance of their business, about 20 feet is the norm.
In the city I live in there are many business that are fighting the smoking ban. Many had gone to big expense to set aside rooms completely closed off & with good ventulation, for smokers. Some would not let children in these rooms. I feel that that is taking it far enough.
It seems that the non-smoker will not be satisfied with anything less than a total ban on smoking. This is pushing too hard, even if they are the majority. Majority right should also recognize the rights of the minority. Especially when eveything except a complete ban has already been done.
Tobacco is a legal product, many make their livings off of the tobacco industry. But that should not make any difference, If you want a total ban on smoking, go after the producer & make the growing, processing of tobacco illegal also!

No it is only being banned in all public enclosed spaces, so pubs, clubs, offices, schools, hospitals, restaurants, etc. People have to smoke ouside now, and it has to be several feet away from the entrance too apparently!! The ban is stupid. Most buildings nowadays (except clubs/pubs) have seperate smoking areas anyway. If you are going to impose a ban then ban it all together or don't bother

Manitoba Canada has had a smoking in public places ban in place for 2 years now. It includes ALL enclosed places (restaurants, bars, private clubs, etc). I am a smoker, but I can tell you that now there is no smoking allowed in the bars, I am loving it. It is so much nicer to go out and not be in a room that is thick with smoke, or have a non smoker next to you complaining about the smoke in the place.
There are smokers who were, and still are, very upset by this ban, but I look at it this way.....For years smokers have subjected non-smokers to not only the smell of cigarette smoke but all the toxins associated with cigarette smoke. If I want to smoke and kill myself in slow and painful manner that is my business, why should I impose that on others.

I hope not. Being happy and applauding a ban on something that is still LEGAL makes no sense at all. It's just another loss of freedoms. Nothing to cheer about there. Smokers are treated like criminals, it's ridiculous.

When the elitist Nanny Gov. loving anti-smoking Nazi's grow a set and make tobacco illegal instead of taking away Americans rights to use a legal product

Almost there in Maine.
No smoking in any public place, workplace or within 50 feet of hospitals, including any outdoor arenas. Add to that a $2.00 per pack cigarette state tax and an ongoing proposal to raise it to $3.00 per pack - yep, the Coalition For a Smoke Free Maine is going strong !

And this from open minded liberals. Mention banning abortion and they go nuts. Seriously, how are you bothered by someone smoking in public? Lighten up!

I got a can of mace for the first person who tries to stop me from smoking in a parking lot. It's for protection, after all.
