The cost of a DVD can change depending on what store you get it from and whether or not it is a special version of the movie/tv show. For example, a new movie at Wal-Mart could cost $15 when the same one at Best Buy could cost $20. You can even get older movies at $5 at some places! It all just depends. And the cost of DVDs is nothing compared to blu-ray discs (anywhere from $25-$40).

Well, seeing as how VHS tapes cost as much as DVD's do now back in their heyday, I don't think they're expensive at all.
Consider how much you pay to see a movie in a theater once- around 8-12 dollars. DVD's give you the ability to rewatch over and over, to access any part of the movie instantly, and to do so from the comfort of your own home.
Then consider all of the extra features: commentaries, behind-the-scenes, DVD-Rom features. These all cost a lot to produce, and in many DVD's double the viewing value of a feature.
I mean, CD's still cost around 10 dollars nowadays, and all they've got is 74 minutes of audio (and potentially some music videos), and DVD's can fit up to 6 hours of VIDEO AND AUDIO in one disc.

Some of the responses I've seen so far are pretty lame. The bottom line is money, pure and simple. The more money the movie brought in at the box office, the higher the price charged for the DVD. It's simple economics of supply and demand. If you have a box office flop, good luck selling the DVD!

they do? I think they are relatively cheap. If my hubby and I go to a movie it's like a $50 adventure.
$8 a ticket X 2= $16
$25 for a shotglass worth of popcorn
$9 for a thimble of soda.
$20 for a DVD is a bargin!!!

It's better than doing time, or paying thousands and thousands of dollars in fines.
taxes, cost to make the dvds, royalties to studios and everyone who worked on that project.

the profit from the dvd has to be split up between many many many people. after lawyers, taxes, fees, they may make 30 cents per dvd.

We're paying for all those folks making illegal copies of movies. The same goes for music CD's. They are charging the buying customes for their losses.
