My son was 2 and I did because I was naturally not producing milk anymroe. This happens for a lot of people at different times, some very early, some very late.

I felt it was the perfect time because it was natural, there was no fighting or fussing to stop. As well the AAP suggests that nursing mothers nurse for 1 full year and then however long they like after that. But La Leche Leuge International (the biggest nursing resource group in the world, who was touting the benifits of the breast long before the AAP) reccomends 2-3 years, as does the World health Orginization (WHO)

Nursing during his second year took a change where solids were his primary source of food and nursing was his second. It is good though because toddlers can be picky eaters and often don't eat a wide varriety of food at a time so I knew it would makeup for any missed nutrition. As well it kept him healthy, the natural anti-bodies in your milk still benifit them and my son didn't get struck with bad colds or anything.

I weaned at 7 1/2 months- sad day. I had a very limited milk supply (it took me five days to pump a collective ounce). With that said, I had to have my baby on my hip 24/7 which I was perfectly happy with. Then he got sick and had no appetite to eat anything for about a week. Seeing as how pumping wouldn't save my milk supply since my baby was so much more efficient, I lost my milk by the time he was ready to eat again. I never engorged or leaked or anything of that nature. I was very sad and hope that the next go around I will be able to go longer.

My son was 3 years old when he weaned himself (he is 12 years old now), and my 2 year old daughter is still nursing..she will also self-wean. I believe in child-led weaning as it seems to be easiest on both mom and child!

My daughter was 11 months and 5 days old. She had been nursing just before naps and bedtime, and she suddenly stopped. I tried everything to get her to start again, and thought it strange that I couldn't even get a half ounce when I pumped both sides for a LONG time. I took Fenugreek and tried Mother's Milk Tea, breast compressions, even putting what tiny bit I could get out of there into a cup, but she refused. A week later I found out I was pregnant. She had stopped exactly a week after I had conceived my second child. I suspect that the taste of my milk changed and that my supply must have dropped way down from the horomones from pregnancy (although I've heard of others who have continued to nurse throughout pregnancy -- wish I could have been one of them!)

My son (second child) is still nursing at 13 months (literally, actually -- he's on me right now ! lol) I intend to allow him to self-wean, but I hope to make it to two years.

By the way, to the one who answered above me ("bad kitty") -- did you know that you don't have to stop breastfeeding to be on the pill?? You just have to take a progesterone-only pill. I'm nursing on the pill right now.

My son was 18 months when he weaned. I did not wean him, he weaned himself, so I really don't have a reason why. He just felt that he was done and I let him give it up. Worked just fine for both of us.

My son was 3 months, and we just weren't good at it. My daughter started weaning herself at 9 months, but we kept it up for a full year. I think with my son, I had nurses and my mother trying to tell me it wasn't going to work, so I gave up. Looking back, if I could try it again, I wouldn't have given up.

First child was 3½ years when he was weaned - pretty much on his own at that.

Second and third children are both still nursing.

My first daughter, who has always been mature for her age, pretty much weaned herself at 10 months. The second went for 14 months before I weaned her because we were moving and I was too stressed out. The third didn't want to stop nursing, but she kept biting me(!) so I weaned her at about 12 months.
