I have heard different things.

Men dressed themselves while women were dressed by others. For the convenience of the dresser the buttons side was changed.

The other story had to do with how women sit side saddle? The wind would blow in if the buttons were the same as a mans shirt.

The link below supports the first theory and also has one on breast feeding.

I'm not completely sure, but I heard once that it is because in times past many women used to have maids dress them, and the buttons were placed where it would be easiest for the maids to button them. Men dressed themselves usually and the buttons were placed on the most convenient side for them.

back in the days of duelling, men's clothes were designed to be pulled open with the left hand, so all the clothes topsides is left and grab weapon with the right hand.

fashion can do whatever it wants now, but you'll think it's weird. girls stuff is designed against guys. it's just reverse. women's clothing were designed weaker. skirts aren't for mobility. that's why japanese pants at higher ranking samurai had more fabric, lower ranking had less fabric. more fabric was supposed to be a handicap.

yay history of fashion

My educated guess is that more men are left-handed and more women are right-handed. That might be the reason. Good question, though!

If women can button them easier, then men can unbutton them easier. A fortuitous advantage.
