i'm hanging a microwave above the stove

I just measured mine. 18 inches.. Lower doesn't work.
My cabinet guy (two years ago) put too big a cabinet over where the microwave was to go and had to totally revamp it for the microwave to fit.
That is 18 inches from the cook surface to the bottom of the microwave.

would the 18 inches be the same for a gas stove

the minimum spec. will be in the installation instructions. It's usually 18 to 19" from stovetop to underside of microhood. You can get away with less, but don't expect warranty coverage if you don't follow the manufacturers specs.
