Whoa there cowboy. First you have to find out from the copyright law folks and see if someone already made that item. If not get a copyright on it immediately. Don't be telling a bunch of people and if this has anything to do with your job, they will claim it as work product.

Congrats on having a great idea!

First thing you should do is try to get a patent on your idea. You can get more info about how to submit one here: http://www.uspto.gov/main/patents.htm

You then have a few options for how to proceed:

1) You can sell the idea to another company, e.g. you have an idea for a new toy invention, you approach a toy or gadget company. I'd suggest putting together a plan and a prototype before you approach a company, along with market research data showing that how many people are willing to buy this product and at what price. You can either sell the idea completely for a lump sum amount, or do a licensing agreement where you get paid for every unit sold.

2) You can do it yourself beginning to end, e.g. you raise money (or use your own savings) to build the product, then approach online and/or offline retailers to see if they'd be willing to carry your product. Getting shelf space is extremely difficult, so unless you're a very astute business person with pre-existing relationships and connections, you might bump into a long series of obstables here.

3) You can build the product, and sell it on eBay and through your own website via SEM (Search Engine Marketing, the goal pay-per-click search results thing, via Yahoo! or other search engines.) This might be easiest if you have the money to do it yourself. Once you've build a following for your product, you'll have a stronger case to approach retailers and have them carry your product.

Good luck!

First, go to us.gov, find and click on the link for the US Patent Office. Using Keywords, find out if anyone has a patent already on an idea similar to yours. If not, download and fill out the patent-filing forms, etc. that you will need.

After that, you will need a business name and tax ID or license. Once those things are in place, write up a business plan -- how you will raise money for marketing, expansion, whatever.

Then I suggest you test the viability of your product by test marketing it, using control groups. Their feedback will tell you whether your idea is worth following up, or dropping.
If it gets positive reviews, look into obtaining a business loan. Try your local city government and/or the federal SBA for information on loans. Just be aware that most new start-ups fail within the first 5 years due to lack of sufficient planning.

''Having an 'idea' itself is ''selling a product''. If you are so confident about your ideas on that product, and you do know that your ideas will work, then there is no stopping you. Work on your ideas, think of catchy adverts, ask yourself ''Why'' your idea will sell, work on those lines, conduct a survey if you feel you will get a clearer view...but otherwise, sorry, you do not get ideas if you cannot sell, but you can come up with amazing ideas, if you know your idea can sell the product. Howyou sell it ? Let your creativity work...

good luck

Ok sales is all about identifying a need. So What ever that you have you need to take a need assesment then approach the people who are in need of your product. Study their behavior and back ground and sell accordingly. Thats how usually sales formulas works. Good Luck. Very Important: You should a-z about your product of you wanna be successfull.

-if its an energy drink you dont want to sell it over the internet
-if its clothing you dont want to sell it in grocery stores..
come on man. you have to give a little more information to get a good answer...

You need to present the idea to people that can use it. Have the people that you want to speak to sign off on the meeting so that they can not use the information without you legally. Present ideas only to people that have resources that you can gain if they try to cross you.
