I don't know a lot about the type of fern it is just that it is a light green full fern while in season. This is my first year to have one so I didn't know if it would come back or if it is time for me to get rid of it.

Cut back the dead looking areas to about 2'' and just add over some more potting soil or light mulch and it will come back to it's full glory in a few months or less, depending on your climate.

If it is an asparagus fern it should grow back.
Try to protect your ferns during frost season by either bringing them indoors or covering them and mulching them.

that would depend on your hardiness zone. i'm from ohio and have ferns and they grow back every year. now if you live somewhere with colder winter temps. it could be a problem. hope this helps....
