Hey guys, I was wondering what "more or less" means in this context.

Matt: Hey Rachel
Rachel: Hi!
Me: Is he your friend?!?!
Rachel:More or less

She said this, and I asked her what it meant, but she said she didn't really know. This has been bugging me all week. I would really appriciate some help on this one!!

Hmm, well it could either mean more than friend or just friends. When people say this, they mostly mean that they are more than friends in a way, but not yet sure.

Friend has connotation and denotation. The denotation is the dictionary meaning and can range from acquaintaince to someone you appreciate and love dearly. By connotation, friend can mean intimacy. In that context, one may be intimate and hoping to go deeper or "steady" and eventually marry. Or one may be platonic.People are supposed to be friends before they are lovers; but most individuals become lovers before they develop the essential friendship.
