The same thing that makes it stick to your face. The individual granules are kind of moist, and when they compress it very tightly, they stick together. Not only does it make your makeup tidier and more compact (no pun intended) but it helps you get a really even amount on your brush or applicator. You'll notice if you ever break a very expensive bronzer and try to us it later; it's hard not to get too much on your brush now that the powder is fallen to pieces.

Because it is compacted under pressure, hence the name-compact.

Compression, and I don't know what else. Look it up. Some is crappy and doesn't though.

it is compressed, but l;ittle do people know, makeup is made of all the discarded oils from the fryers in restaurants!
