Unfortunate what happened but most social-networking sites have ways to report problems. There's ways to block messages from offensive users. People have to learn the techniques to deal effectively with cyberbullies on IM's, blogs and emails. Seeking counseling and having a good support system may have been helpful. Best to maintain a high self-esteem regardless of the challenges.

The problem is, anyone can indulge in this behavior. People feel safe in the anonymity of the Internet. Yes, it should be illegal and those caught indulging in this behavior should be punished. Others who think about doing it must be made to think, is it worth the punishment if I get caught?

Of course the ACLU is against it. That is something that recommends it as a good idea.
