Before you read this, be aware that you are allowed 10 characters per realm and can have characters in many different realms if you so choose. Don't be afraid to try out each character type and see which one suits you best. If you don't like the character, stick him on the shelf and try again. But give them a chance, 20th level at least, before you toss them away.
It really depends on your playstyle and what you enjoy doing. Long combats bore me, so I want it over with quickly, win or lose. I've played all of the classes up to 20th level and have played 2 hunters to 60+
Hunter: Pet class, Ranged Class, Good/Great Damage, Good Armor, No Healing (Except for Pet)
Main Issue: Has a deadzone where he can't shoot or melee. Bad reputation with the general population. The class is either overpowered or worthless, depending on who you talk to.
Big Plus: Can sit back and fill most enemies with arrows while the enemy focuses on the pet.
Travel: You're going to have to pony up the gold for a mount at 40th level.
Warlock: Pet class, Any distance, Good Damage, Poor Armor, Poor Healing
Main Issue: Can burn up mana quickly and has no easy recovery method
Big Plus: Can unload several Damage over Time spells that will follow enemies to their grave.
Travel: Free quest mount at 40th level.
Mage: Any distance, Great Damage, Poor Armor, No Healing
Main Issue: Can easily get a creature's attention (aggro) and can have problems losing it.
Big Plus: Fire Magi are good at burst damage, Frost Magi are good at enemy control. Turning enemies into sheep is amusing.
Travel: Can teleport to major cities at 20th level. Can portal the party to major cities at 30th level. You're going to have to pony up the gold for a mount at 40th level.
Priest: Any distance, Poor/Good Damage, Poor Armor, Good Healing
Main Issue: Lacks teeth. Healing can pull aggro just as bad as damage. Can burn mana quickly.
Big Plus: Can burn enemy mana quickly too!
Travel: You're going to have to pony up the gold for a mount at 40th level.
Warrior: Mostly Melee, Good/Great Damage, Great Armor, No Healing
Main Issue: You can use a missile weapon, but probably only once per combat. Your primary purpose is to act as a pet and build up aggro while team members do the damage.
Big Plus: Very tough and with good support can control the combat flow.
Travel: You're going to have to pony up the gold for a mount at 40th level.
Paladin: Melee, Poor/Good Damage, Great Armor, Great Healing
Main Issue: No missile weapons, Can have mana issues.
Big Plus: Usually won't die as long as he has Mana.
Travel: Free mount at 40th level.
Shaman: Any distance, Good/Great Damage, Good Armor, Good Healing
Main Issue: Mana Hog!
Big Plus: Shaman tends to be a Warrior/Mage/Priest with the benefits of all 3, but great at none of them.
Travel: Gets a fast travel form at 20th level.
Rogue: Mostly Melee, Great damage, Good Armor, No Healing
Main Issue: Tends to crumple when facing more than a single opponent.
Big Plus: Stealth allows you to sneak past things that most people have to fight through.
Travel: Besides a sprint spell that's good for 15 seconds every 5 minutes, you're going to have to pony up the gold for a mount at 40th level.
Druid: Any distance, Good/Great Damage, Good/Great Armor, Good Healing
Main Issue: Tries to do a lot of things, so doesn't do any of them better than other classes.
Big Plus: Shapeshifter. Warrior/Rogue/Priest-like powers. With some practice, you can learn to switch between forms and do damage, healing, or armor as needed.
Travel: Gets a fast travel form at 30th level.
Go to the WoW Class Forums. Each one has a "sticky" at the beginning that includes a guide on how to play the class and a more detailed view of what you can expect.

Hunter is the easiest to play, according to a few people I've talked to. Might be a place to start.
Look on the game's official web site for information on the different classes, it's fairly informative.
