It can last for what seems like a few minutes for me.
Not sure how long it takes, perhaps 2 weeks or so of trying to do it every night should at least get it to happen once or twice.
Flying is definitely the best.
One time a guy with a gun was chasing me in the mall. I suddenly stopped, turned around and turned him into a rabbit. 2 kids walking by picked him up and walked away petting him. That was pretty cool.

You have to keep in mind that lucid dreaming is not necessarily the same as dream control. Though obviously you can't consciously control your dreams unless you are consciously aware in your dreams, the quality of awareness is much more common than control.
The amount of time it takes to learn it can depend on a lot of factors. Some people never pick it up. To some it comes naturally. A typical time period for those who actively set out to develop dreaming skills is probably around a couple years. These days, of course, there is a lot more advice and materials available, so that can be of use too.
In my dreams I enjoy having super powers, so most of the time when I'm lucid I do. My typical collection includes a kind of flying (more often it's like walking on air), telekinesis, and a grab-bag of other stuff. It can be pretty fun, actually! Give it a whack!

Sorry... you can't learn how to have lucid dreams. Current research shows that dreams are not controllable by the dreamer. Lucid dreaming can be cool or it can be horrifying if the subject is not pleasant. I've never had a particularly funny lucid dream.

oh man, i've done that a couple of times and it is pretty weird. the only thing that you've got to do to get into a lucid dream is just simply realize that you are dreaming. it's not too hard - i did it in like fourth grade. but, i've been having trouble trying to get back to it.

a few years ago I had a few lucid dreams. it hadn't happened for so long...
I was about 8 or nine.
I remember once thinking "I am sleeping, I don't like this dream" and then I kinda waked into something else... I don't remeber what it was now.
once I didn't like my dream and told myself "it's just a dream, wake yourself up, wake up" and I awoke. it wasn't because I was scared or something like that. I decided to wake up, knowingly.
also, twice in my life I managed to lie in bed, and decide what I want to dream about- and then I actually dreamt about it.
one was about 2-3 years ago.
decided to "meet" a friend in a dream (we live in diffrent countries now and can't drink coffe together) and it worked!! we both dreamt of each other...
yeah....
can it be learned?
I don't know...
:)
good luck

It has only happened to me a couple of times. I don't know why. I just suddenly realize that I am dreaming and can do whatever I want. Unfortunatley, I've never done anything very cool and just ended up waking myself up.
