Goalies watch the tapes and see the mannerisms of players just before they kick the ball in order to guess the right way to jump. Even then, if the ball is in the high corner it's difficult to stop.

can i tell you one trick?

i have thought about this loong time ago :-
if you are the keeper, and a person is taking a penalty. why do you need to stand near the goal line? Why can't he stand 2 inches away from the ball so that however h takes the penalty, you will be abl;e to save it!

Make eye contact with the player that is about to execute the kick, even if it's from affar. Then you keep your eyes on the ball at all times, until it comes flying forth. Then advance to where the ball is heading, since you would already know where it's headed. It works for me!

You throw cheater Giggs and the ogre Rooney in front of the ball hoping they get a concussion and wake up only when the Champions Leagues tournament is over, that's karma.

Either its 50/50, the shooter gaffs, or you as goalie, know the shooters tendencies, and you go the correct way.

If the shooter takes the shot properly, the goalie theoretically can't stop the shot.

The goalie should use his hands and his body to block the kick... or you can hope that the ball would miss the net entirely.

Some keepers watch the kicker's eyes, some look at the plant foot, some watch to see the swivel of the hips. You try to find something that the kicker does that tells you which way he's going. And if you can't find anything, then guess my friend, guess!!

superBobo is correct, i personally still sturggle with stopping penalty kicks, its actually quite hard coz u can only go in one direction and dats either left or right and sometimes they do it between ur legs when ur all nervous (lol dats wot my friend did and i didnt even notice)

the ball doesnt go past the goal line. how you stop it is up to interpreation:
Maybe you can have Trezeguet take the kick or have Buffon in goal.

It's 50/50, you either go left or right. Throw your whole body in either direction!!
