Thanks for the blue book site but your quotes are inaccurate,The bbv for 626 $5,070 alero $5,370 and the lot cgarges $1000 finance fee...Oldsmobile went bankrupt but it is a GM car so the parts are interchangeable...basically a grand am anyway...

Neither car is worth the money.
Alero $2500 to $3000
626 $2800 to $3500

626. The Alero, while a fine looking car, is a POS.
Getting an Alero repaired wouldn't be a problem. Under the skin, it's the same as a Pontiac Grand Am. Unfortunately getting it repaired would be a frequent non-problem.
Look here, see what I mean:

The 626 is a better choice, but not the best. The 626 and MX-6 are the least reliable cars Mazda has made outside of their turbo rotaries. (They're also very unspectactular cars regardless...not up to Mazda's other cars handling wise)

edit: Blue Book is a work of fiction. Notice how you almost always see car ads saying "BELOW BLUE BOOK!" You know what that means? It means Blue Book is wrong.

I remember when the Alero came out...the torquey V6 made it a favorite with some auto-journalists, and overall the design and interior weren't really offensive.
But considering Olds is dead, its a tad harder to find parts for it in the next few years, ot to mention the depreciation will kill you. (remember Daewoo anyone?)
I would go with the 626...the drivability is a bit more fun, and a bit more reliable in the end. The 2.5L DOHC V6 is bulletproof and easy to work on overall, plus it sounds a bit more sophisticated than the 3.4LOHV V6 GM unit. The 4 cylinder 2.0L is a good reliable unit as well, just make sure you change the timing belt before it's time.
Other than A/C here or there, or electrical issue here and there, haven't really heard anything bad about it.

If those are the only two choices, I would go with the Mazda 626. It's going to be a lot tougher to get any Oldsmobile fixed now that the division has folded.

I would take the 626 manual (if you don't mind shifting), but I would try to talk them down at least 1000-1500 unless the thing is just in cherry condition.
