he was stronger. I don't think that Mer can swim. Also the writers wanted more drama.

If you saw the beginning of the show, Derek accused her of trying to drown herself in the bath tub. She was a mess over everything that happened with her mom. Maybe she didn't try all that hard to get out of the water.
The man that climbed out was seriously injured, if he could climb out so could Meredith.
On a side note they better not kill her off.

if she was under water for 30 mins and recovers with no brain damage then this is surely a medical miracle if ever there was a miracle

Maybe she's not a very strong swimmer.....I wondered just how long she was under without oxygen. Gee...maybe she'll be even more brain-damaged once she wakes up from her "death".
