That depends on who you are, and what you do with computers.
For parents, some will love the new built in parental controls for locking down shared computers, preventing there kids from using it during off hours, and white list web access. Others will hate that some of there hardware is not yet, nor may never be supported (Nomad Zen Jukebox owners for example)
Most programs that I've tried have worked on both a new system, and on Older laptop.
How good it is depends on who you ask.
Mac users will say nothing new, they just stole everything from others.
Linux users will say it's still full of security problems, and cost too much.
Music Lovers will complain about the new DMR system built in with its restrictions.
So in short, some love it, others will hate it.

One reason it is selling so good is because you can't buy a new Windows machine without it, unless you get someones over stock that they just haven't gotten rid of, or a refurbished machine.
It is like XP when it first came out. It's a good Operating System, but there are still a lot of programs that aren't compatible with it yet. It is more of a resource hog too. Most people should avoid it unless they have to buy a new machine, in which case they will be forced to go with Vista. In 9 months to a year it will be an excellent OS.
I am running Vista Ultimate as a test environment for the system I am administrator for. All I can say is that we purchased all new computers here in order to avoid Vista for at least a year. Many of our crucial programs and Vista don't cooperate, same with Office 2007. Granted most people won't put it through the rigors I do, but there are plenty of people posting on these boards about hardware and software that quits working when they upgrade to Vista to warrant a caution about upgrading to soon.
PS to "Jarhead" You can turn off the UAC (User Account Control) if you have admin privileges and you won't have to go through the hassle of approving every action you try to perfom on the Vista system.

Never buy a new program when it first comes out. Too many bugs. I've heard there are some major security issues and issues with running other programs on it...

Stick with XP, at least I don't have to give myself permission to open files or folders or downloads - Every time I choose to do so.. It sucks, I wouldn't use it, if they gave it to me for free.
