Samoan migration started around the 1970s, almost entirely from Western Samoa, via New Zealand. There are around 2,500 Samoans in Queensland according to the 1996 census, often attracted by perceived educational and economic opportunities.

Tongan migrants come to Australia to study, work or to join family members, a pattern also traced back to the 1970s. Currently there are around 800 Tongans in Queensland. Australia's higher standard of living and greater educational opportunities offered the possibility of sending money back home to relatives or the church. Tongans have tended to migrate in families and maintain strong kinship ties.
