Well first let's start with free software:
Ccleaner is a great option and it's free it cleans up all your computer and it scans and fix the registry.

I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry,
You might run your Anti-virus scan.
Go to START and pick RUN. Type MSCONFIG and go to the startup section. Uncheck the programs that you do not need. Keep your Anti-virus checked.
