Spending too much money on yourself = wasting too much money on yourself. If you ever noticed, spending money on yourself might make you happy temporarily, but it really doesn't affect your long-term happiness. (Which is why people have to keep spending to keep the cycle going.)
If you weren't born rich,
you have 2 choices:
1) Live rich and be poor, or
2) Live poor and be rich.
I chose #2.
But actually, if you want both, you can do both. Do #2 first, save up enough money, say 50K for example, and then any money you make after that, you spend. (Or better, continue saving, but at a lesser rate.)
I've saved up & invested +50K, so now I only have to work part-time. I can quit and not have a job for a couple years, no problem.
Start saving when you're young - the younger the better.

I personally look after my family budget and all spending items need to be accounted for so that at any point in time you know where you are. Requires discipline but that's the only way.
To help you with budgeting I'd recommend a personal finance software by Australian business Parcus Group.
Easy to use program with features including budgeting, financial planning, real estate analysis, shares valuation, life insurance...
Costs US$24 so it's not a huge investment but absolutely great value for money.
You can get it on http://www.parcusgroup.com/index.html

I buy things in spurts or when I need them. I think that I spend too little on myself each month and should do more. We only live once and should make the best of our lives.
