Supermarkets will still use Muzak, which is composed of pleasant, but non integrated melodies that start on a theme, but then change in key or rhythm without any apparent reason.
This ethereal music is supposed to provide an unnoticed accompaniment to your shopping activities, and can be changed to suit the mood of the shop, or weather and season for example.
This kind of 'entertainment' worked very well in the 80's and 90's, but with the enormous exposure we now have to popular music and rhythm, the idea of surreal music has become dated.

Apparently (and this is absolutely true) the sort of supermarket music you hear is especially created because it is believed that mellow soft music in such a surrounding actually stimulates the mind and makes people want to spend more, and when you see Tesco's prices, why not?

I've heard that the annoying music they use during peak hours is to make the customers do their shopping quicker. It keeps the staff busy and stops people complaining about the queues.

It's specially recorded/sequenced to lull your critical faculties in order to encourage you to BUY MORE!!

If it was video, you'd have those single-frame subliminal images of some attractive young woman stuffing a Cadbury's Flake in her gob.

Not all of it is. I find myself standing in the neighborhood supermarket singing the songs that are playing all the time.
