Cows are always producing milk although the peak of their production is right after birth. I've worked at dairys and treated cattle and most dairys will only leave the calf on their mama for the most 3 days- then they'll put the calves into individual calf boxes and bottle feed them replacement milk 2 times a day. And the mama goes to the milking barn. Most dairys won't milk their cows unless they have had a calf and will stop milking that cow about 6 months into her pregnancy.

Cows produce milk in the same way all mammals do, in response to late gestation pregnancy and subsequent offspring. The cow has just been selectively bred to produce more milk for longer.

Cows tend to produce milk for 305 days a year, with a 'drying off' period before the birth of their next calf.

Dairy cows produce 24/7, unless they are unhealthy. They need to be milked at least twice a day.

Cows constantly produce milk.

Dairy farmers tend to milk them twice a day (12 hours apart) to ease the pressure on their udders.

If a calf is drinking the milk, it will be drinking little and often
