We have just been told the the copper tubing between the air handler in the attic and outside compressor unit has a leak and needs to be replaced, at a cost of over $2,000.00.

We will have another opinion, but if there is a leak in the tubing, is replacement our only option? Is there possibly a leak sealant that can be injected instead.

Help!

The tubing is fastened to the inside wall, so we would have major problems cutting through the wall. Alternatively, we can put in a whole new copper tubing with easy accessibility through the attic to connect the two units. Should this option reduce the cost?

I understand your situation completely. There is no sealant you can put in a system to seal a leak. By law, the repairman can't put freon in the system if it is leaking. I think $2k is a bit high, unless he is replacing the "coil" inside the air handler as well. This is one of the problems when running refrigerant lines inside walls. I'd get a second or third estimate before proceding. Good luck.

If your copper tubing is leaking the pipe needs to be cut out where the leak is and another piece soldered back in it's place. After this is done , the refrigerant needs to be added back to the system. This is a fairly easy job and should not cost no where near what you were quoted.
