I got my daughter who was active in many after school activities a cell because of the safety factor. I wanted to know who she was with and where she was going all the time. I didn't want her to have the excuse that she couldn't find a phone and be somewhere that she shouldn't be. Try using the safety factor on your mom. I felt so much better knowing that I could contact my girl at any moment and she could get me if she needed a ride. It really paid off when she and a friend were at a bonfire in the country and their car was robbed and all the windows broken. They were able to summon the police and call us for a ride home. Lots of phones have GPS in case you are kidnapped. I think cell phones for a young girl are great.
