Back up your opinion - I need all the ammunition I can get to convinve my sister-in-law that I'm not crazy, and that no, I really DON'T want to give the Baby Einstein videos a try. My son is going to have his whole life to watch TV, why plunk him in front of it now, while his brain is still developing so rapidly? (He's 8 months old).

Don't try the videos. You're right. They don't benefit the child in any way. Here's an idea - how about if parents teach their child though songs, movement, and play rather than watching a video. Everyone would agree that the parent is a much better teacher than the television. As for those that allow their kids to watch t.v, try to limit it and don't expect them to learn anything through this method.

Here's a good quote you can use, "Television viewing may be harmful at a time when brains triple in size,
In a 2005 study, he found children under 3 who watch at least three hours a day scored lower on cognitive measures at age 6 than children who watched little or no television during early childhood." check second link to see the whole article.

My son is 9 months old and i dont "plunk" him in front of the TV but he sure will watch it when songs come on. I dont think the tv should be a baby sitter at any age however the baby einstein are actually teaching your child things regardless if you want to admit it or not. My son loves to watch the wonder pets, I think its the music as well as sesame street and he will crawl away when he's done. You cant force a baby to sit still and watch TV so why are you so concerned. Turn on the baby einsteins sit him down and when he's done he'll crawl away {that is if he is crawling}

I totally agree with you, TV is bad for babies, I never let my 9 month old watch TV. I read an article where they suggested that kids from birth till age 10 or so, should not be allowed to watch TV and if you are going to allowed them only 2 hrs of TV. Let the baby crawl, play with toys, TV is a great baby sitter but lets not be lazy here, play with the baby. Go to WEBMD and find alot of literature about babies and TV. Babyk Einstein is a good sub if you let them watch crappy TV.

One of the best books ever written on the subject, full of solid scientific research, is Remotely Controlled by Dr Aric Sigman http://www.amazon.co.uk/Remotely-Controlled-television-damaging-lives/dp/0091902606/sr=1-2/qid=1172086817/ref=sr_1_2/026-2400620-2019650?ie=UTF8&s=books
Good for you, stick to your instincts. TV is not good for a child of any age and this book will explain why. Also Dr Marie Winn wrote a good book on the subject called The Plug In Drug. Which is exactly what it is. Good luck!

I disagree... TV is just another toy, as long as you limit the amount of time you let them watch (not over 1 hour a day), it can be very educational. 8m is a bit young, I start around 18m when they are very eager to learn new things and are able to learn from shows like sesame street, blues clues, etc.

My pediatrician advised us not to let our young children watch t.v. I remember him saying that the same goes for the computer. It has to do with the screen, not what is on. Here's a link explaining this from the Washington Post. Baby Einstein will not help your baby in any way!!!! Good for you for standing up to your in-law!

My kids watch Baby First tv and Sprout and Discovery Kids and Animal Planet....stuff like that.
I would NEVER let them watch Jerry Springer...wtf is wrong with you tanya?
Nothing wrong with SOME tv shows...but most stuff on tv is downright sick and offensive.
Just use parental controls.

lol the tv is great for them they aren't being influenced yet all they see is bright colors and faces moving around and talking in a language they don't yet understand. For them its fascinating hell my 7 month old gets a kick out of jerry springer. I think its all the sound effects.
