I know metal filings and magnets attract one another, but what about deconstructing these cliches in a metaphysical manner?
They can't both be true in the same instance, can they?

They are probably both true in every instance.
for example
Opposites do attract - those are the sexes.
Like attracts like, similar ideals and values.
