I know Mazda 626s are notorious for tranny problems due to a ford built cd4e, but how reliable are the manual trannies?

there is less friction in a manual trans compared to a auto so if you keep maintained it should last a long time . The clutches are another story.

Well buddy you just said it. Since you think the ill maintained Ford auto transmissions are bad then why would an Ill mintained manual be any better.....

As a rule Manual transmissions are much more reliable than autos, A wole lot fewer parts to fail...
