it goes to the screen where it syas windows XP then turns off ..please help

Try going into SAFE MODE buy pressing the F8 key at start up.then from there you can find out what the prob is in windows.it might of happend because you add new hardware or software.GOOD LUCK..

Are there any disks in your drives? Do you have an mp3 player/ipod plugged in? Is there anything unnecessary plugged into your USB ports? Take out/unplug all those, and try again.
Have you tried your system restore, starting in safe mode, and any other option (F-key function) that comes up when your system starts up? Give those a shot.
You might be bugged or may have accidentally altered your programming--my dad did this once--he used to play with the keyboard when the computer was starting up...If none of this works talk to a tech support person (if you have an hp, you can chat online at hp.com). You may have to reboot your computer, if nothing else works.

It sounds like bad tracks on the hard drive. format and do clean installation, if that did not fix it buy a new hard drive.
