I'm doing my master's thesis on this, and besides the things mentioned right above this response, the one major thing I have to add is that goths are the cultural decedents of the Romantic movement. In fact, "Gothic," as the term is now used, comes from the Romantics concept of a golden age of culture in Northern Europe in early modern era. The Romantics relied on feeling more than reason and put a great deal of emphasis on artistic expression. The mindset of the Romantics was recreated in the post-punk movement later named "goth" in the late 70s.

You have asked the right guy,, waaaaaay back in the early 80's I was the only kid running around my high school wearing all black listening to the ramones, the doors, sex pistols and rancid.
The goth subculture is tied completley to music, movies and litrature, you will learn this as you study.
Throughout the 80's and early 90's the cure and depeche mode turned the goth culture sort of whiny and gay. Then through the 90's and into the new millennium we found our fierceness again. with the onset of bands like soundgarden and nine inch nails.
Goth culture has been around forever on the fringes of society, I once saw a very old movie with a beautiful woman, jet black hair, pale skin, red lips and a long flowing black gown adorned with a red spider web pattern she was as goth as anything today. Many people in society are fascinated by the "darker" side of things. I have been this way as long as I can remember. I really believe there is some thing ageless to this way of looking at the world. If you study history you will find it is nothing new.
Some like to give Anne Rice all the credit,, she deserves a lot of it but I like to credit guys like Edgar Allen Poe and Brahm Stoker as the real fathers of the goth culture. Movies like the crow, lost boys and Authors like Anne Rice have given many Icons for the goth subcultre to identify with.
I am much older now, I still wear black and love all things "dark" but I have found a peace and wisdom I lacked early on. I probably listen to more Michael Buble than H.I.M. and now prefer wine over beer. I worship neither a god or devil and believe we are simply part of nature. But the night is my element and black is my color. It is who I am. Not just something I choose to do.

I think Gothics are just a term for people who are intrigued with dark things, and historic romance. I'm sure the culture came to be when people who had the same interests formed together, and then were termed "Gothic".

Do mean Gothic people? If so, I think it started with punk rock music and "Death Metal", the way these people dressed and the music they perform touches the "angst" in these people and they are "inspired" by it. Then the success of Anne Rice's "Interview with a vampire" and similarly themed books and movies just made "Goth" all the more popular and accepted.

embarrassing grammatical mistakes you made so far:
1) You spelled 'What' wrong (Way);
2) You should not have put a comma in "gothic's", that means "gothic is" and that does not make sense;
3) It should be 'came into...' not 'came to...';
4) It should be 'existence' not 'existents';
5) You spelled 'explain' wrong (explane);
6) It should be '...don't say anything bad' not '...dont say nothing bad';
7) You spelled 'please' wrong (pless);
8) You wrote 'think' when you should have wrote 'thank'
...maybe you should learn how to speak and spell before you attempt to conquer a whole 'project'.
I'm just trying to help.
p.s. thats a terrible topic for a project, think of something else

Because they are lost emotional souls, they strive to be different because being different is the only way they can achieve any sort of normalcy, they just take it a little further than the rest of us.
