you don't say whether you are enquiring about UK prices or not but will answer as if you are. cars were around £5/600...petrol approx5.5 old pence gallon..milk 1.75 p per pint houses £2000-10000 depending on where in the country you lived and type of house

price of gas/petrol in 1947: 15 cents (about 6 or 7 pence)
loaf of bread: 13 cents
avg cost of a new car: $1,300.00
avg yearly wages; $2850.00

The same amount of gold in 1947 would buy a new car then as it would now. In other words, if 100 troy ounces would have bought a new car then, it would buy a new car now. Gold fluctuates with inflation so it never loses value.
