I'm rather fond of cinderblock and 2 x 6 planks to make bookcases. You need to put something down below the first cinderblock to protect the floor, and lay that set longwise. Top with the first plank, stand cinderblocks on end at intervals, top with another plank... etc.

You can paint the cinderblocks and wood some interesting colors to make them more decorative, or vary the length of the planks for more interest.... Let me see if some simple ASCII drawing comes out right.

When I moved in my apartment, I had two large granite slabs that were just the right size for coffee tables. I used a couple of cinder blocks as the base, but I 'disguised' them with some 'marble' Contact paper.

First, I liberally drizzled a thick glue all over the surface of the block. Then I placed the paper over that (remove the backing first) and rubbed it down flat very hard, and let dry over night. You'll have to do this one side at a time and it helps to have the paper already cut to size. To prevent the stack from shifting, I placed a layer of that rubbery sheet you can put in your pantry to keep things from moving between each block and the slab. When it was all finished, it looked great!

(I forget what its called, but its the same stuff you can buy to put between the floor and your rug to keep it from sliding around).
