It depends on the quality of the drive. I have had some hd last for yr's & are still going. & have seen others 1 month out of the box die.

The lifespan of a HD is measured by MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures), usually in thousands of hours.

The truth of the matter is, that the manuafcturers only make them good enough to get past the warranty period. I read a great technical article on the quality of hard drives about a year ago, and that's what the expert had to say.
What a drag.

There Is A Huge Difference in Life Expectancy:
These Days they're getting gradually less because of the cost reduction in manufacturing:
Really Depends on the type:
3½ inch ata(desktop)
3½ inch sata(desktop)
2½ inch ata(laptop)
2½ inch sata(laptop)
1.85inch sata(vaio laptop only)
(not old enough to form opinions yet)
And the brand/model of mother board/external case they are married with,
And To A very small extent, what capacity
30GB, 60GB, 80GB, 100GB, 120GB, 160GB,
200GB, 300GB, 500GB, 1TB
This opens it self to around 1,000,000+ ballpark life expectancies. (ballpark because then it will totally depend on the amount of usage per day and the temperature enviroment and the amount of radio/magnetic interference & general temperature/speed of temperature change)
A general ballparkexpectancey from my point of veiw is:
-- 3-8years (desktops)
-- 2-5 years (laptops)
-- 3-6 years external 3½ inch &
-- 2-4 years external 2½ inch (occasional use only)
-- 6-months - 2 years years external
3½ inch (full time use when computer is on)
-- 6 months to - 18 months external 2½ inch (full time use when computer is on)
Hope this helps

3-5 years. all depends on usage and reliability of the model. i once had a seagate 4gb!! that lived for 8 years. but then again i had an ibm/hitachi deskstar 60 gb that lived for only a year and a half. sata might be the best option at present on a budget.

They usually last from one to five years. Of course there are some that are DOA (dead on arrival).
