Gnats will swarm the highest point of a warm body. (if you are outside and gnats start to swarm you, its your head--just lift your hand and they will swarm it instead...)
Fill a water balloon with warm water it place it below some fly paper. They'll swarm the balloon and get stuck to the paper.
if the infestation is in your kitchen, make sure that you treat the drains in your sink. Run plenty of hot water and the garbage disposal. Run a little bleach down there too. We had an infestation of fruit flies after visiting the Farmer's Market once, and I spent all day scrubbing down the kitchen after getting rid of all the bad fruit. Didn't treat the drains, and after work the next day, came home to a whole new batch of fruit flies (and had to repeat the process from the day before)!

Where are the gnats showing up at? There are several kinds, is it outdoors, in the bathroom, kitchen etc?

Try Terro ant killer. Leave it on a piece of card board where you see the gnats the most. It worked for us. It will take a day or two. Don't let your pets get into it. (We get Terro from Wal-mart).
