I have a Windows XP machine and an Ipod Video 30GB. I have not enable hard disk use on my Ipod. Whenever I plug my 7in1 media card reader into a USB port on my machine, my Ipod will not sync. Itunes reports that my Ipod is in recovery mode and it needs to erase the Ipod to fix the situation. Erasing the Ipod does not fix anything.

If I unplug my media card reader, then Itunes will sync my Ipod with no problems. My father's new Dell with Vista has a built in media card reader. He has the same Ipod issue as me, but unfortunately unhooking the media card reader is much more difficult since it is internal.

How would a USB hub fix anything?

But what if the two devices in question are plugged directly into the motherboard. (i.e. not through an unpowered hub)...Is a powered hub really going to provide more reliable power than the motherboard itself?

I am not an iTunes expert, but it seems that the software is detecting your media card reader as an ipod and plugging in a second one simply causes more conflict. Check on apple.com to see if there is an update to itunes.

USB devices get their power directly from the bus itself, these are the two outside pins that you see on the port. This power source is only capable of supplying a limited amount of current. So if you have two devices combined draw more current than what the bus is capable of supplying either or both devices will seem to malfunction. Using a separate USB hub (powered) will alleviate this situation.

I definitely have used the two and for my area have not observed any distinction in speed. i think of the only time it would rely is that in case you're using an older (ie version a million) USB port somewhat than the swifter (version 2) ports which at the instant are primary. I, too, might choose for a laptop Card only via inner area of it, you could only flow away it in and not could hassle approximately dropping it or breaking it off on some thing, etc.

There is obviously a conflict between the two hardware. You might wanna try to get a USB port and plug both of those in at the same time on the port.
