Generally, municipalities get water from one of two sources. A reservoir (or lake) that is on the surface, or via water wells. Surface water is easy to find as it will be the closest lake.

People swim in it, pee in it, ride their boats in it, animals poop and die in it.

Kinda gross, ain't it?

Surface water percolates down through sandy soil to groundwater aquifers. Water well drillers poke a piece of pipe in the ground and pump the water out of it. Most wells are several hundred feet deep (if not a 1,000 or more).

When industries leak materials into the soil, it also seeps down to the water table where the chemicals will flow. If your city water well is downgradient of the release, you may have nasty chemicals in the water.

What purpose does water serve? See above.

Not knowing where you live, you will have to ask you city department of public works what the source for your water is.

Seems like a pretty straightforward question. But your question does not say what kind of help you want. (Ahem..you don't want us to do your homework FOR you do you??)
